ACT-Wazalendo’s Dorothy Semu takes over as Tanzania Centre for Democracy chairperson

Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) announced a change in leadership following the expiry of the previous term, in line with its rotational chairpersonship among member political parties.

ACT-Wazalendo leader Hon. Dorothy Semu has been handed the chairpersonship of the Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) for a one-year term, taking over from Chadema after the party completed its tenure.

In line with the TCD Constitution, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has assumed the position of deputy chairperson, with CCM Mainland Vice-Chair Hon. Stephen Wasira appointed to the role.

The leaders were elected during the TCD Summit held on April 17, 2026, at the centre’s offices in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam.

Speaking after taking over the leadership, TCD Chairperson Hon. Semu said her tenure would prioritise strengthening reconciliation and cooperation among political stakeholders.

“The goal is to ensure Tanzania moves forward in building genuine democracy, remains a peaceful country, and becomes a tool for building an inclusive economy. This is a task for all Tanzanians, and we are continuing that work,” she said.

TCD operates under a rotational leadership system in which the chairpersonship is passed among member parties based on alphabetical order.

Its member parties include ACT-Wazalendo, CCM, CUF, Chaumma and NCCR–Mageuzi.
