Tanzania Centre for Democracy commits to boost youth involvement in politics

The Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) convened to strengthen the involvement of the younger generation in the realm of politics, with the primary goal of instilling self-confidence among them to actively engage in political affairs.

In an intergenerational dialogue held on October 5th, 2023, in Dar es Salaam, TCD members collectively agreed on three pivotal resolutions to enhance youth participation in politics.

The first resolution sought to amplify the influence of young individuals within the political landscape. The second resolution aimed at nurturing self-assurance among youth actively involved in politics, empowering them to have a more substantial voice in decision-making.

Lastly, there was a determined effort to establish a national youth council, a pivotal step toward giving young voices a formal platform in political discourse.

Professor Ibrahim Lipumba, the Chairman of TCD, urged participants to consider the broader interests of children and society as a whole when discussing democracy and youth participation in politics. He emphasized that promoting democracy should encompass advocating for the younger generation to ensure their development and active involvement in shaping the nations future.

Professor Lipumba further stressed the significance of young people directing their attention to critical societal issues such as education, employment opportunities, and the overall well-being of the community. This approach, he noted, would lead to a more holistic development of the country.

The forum, organized by TCD, aligns with their mission to bolster democracy in Tanzania while fostering sustainable development, peace, and harmonious relationships among politicians and political parties.

Bernadetha Kafuko, the Executive Director of TCD, commended President Samia Suluhu for her leadership style, which showcases a steadfast dedication to democratic principles.

Consuelo Natalie, representing the Swiss Embassy, underscored the importance of empowering young people to participate actively in the nations development.

Andy Allen, a representative from the US Embassy, emphasized the pivotal role that the youth should play in any democracy. He quoted U.S. President Joe Biden in asserting that democracy requires intentional efforts, highlighting the need to involve young minds to achieve meaningful progress in democratic governance. Allen also stressed that the best form of democracy addresses the most pressing concerns of citizens.

Throughout the discussion, participants, including leaders from various political parties, shared their personal political experiences, delving into the historical journeys of politicians in the country.
